DiY: Design your own flowerbed signs
Hello spring! It's finally here, at least according to the calendar. But it doesn't really look like it outside yet. Because even though the sun has finally dared to peek out from behind the clouds, just a week ago the weather gods surprised us with fresh snow. It's hard to imagine that the gardening season could really get started now with such changeable weather. A little patience is still required...or is it? I also know that unsatisfying feeling of wanting to finally get started in the garden but not being able to. For all of you whose fingers are itching to get started, here's the good news. You can start now! Whether it's drawing up a plan for your beds, going out to buy seeds , starting tomato seeds , pepper seeds , etc. on the windowsill, or simply making something decorative for your garden. How about a beautiful wooden sign for your bed, for example? Here are short and sweet DIY instructions for a beautiful bed sign. Made from recycled material, of course, and really easy to make.
What you need:
Untreated wood, as light as possible, as soft as possible. You decide the size. Leftover pieces of wood from your last construction project? Definitely works! Leftover wood from the attic? Works too! The only thing that really matters is that the wood is untreated and as light as possible. When you pick up new wood from the hardware store, take a look in the leftovers box and ask the employee about wood trimmings. You can often find gems there for a bargain price.
Soldering irons or wood burning irons (for woodwork) are also available online for around €30 or used on eBay classifieds.
Let's go
Of course, there are no limits to your design. Whether it's a simple font, a typographic masterpiece, beautiful decorations, or artistic drawings - anything is possible here. A simple font suits my salad bed. Here, I made it easy for myself and selected the appropriate font on the computer and printed out the name as a template. Then simply place the template on the piece of wood and press the lettering through with a ballpoint pen. This is very quick and easy, especially with such soft wood. If you want to get creative with your design, all the better. Nevertheless, I still recommend drawing a template on paper and then pressing it through. This way, you won't end up with unsightly scribbles on the wood later. Once the template is finished, you still need to find a suitable workspace... Using a soldering iron in the living room is not a good idea. Although it will quickly fill the entire apartment with the smell of smoke, the smoke alarm won't be silent for long. So: off to the shed, or better yet, to the balcony or terrace. Are you sitting comfortably? Then the "branding" can begin. But wait: Don't get too cocky! Pyrography also requires practice. Take a test piece and practice handling the tool first. Always remember: it will be extremely hot!
The pyrography:
The tool set includes various soldering iron attachments. Depending on what you want to write or draw, you can choose the right attachment. Caution: Never change the attachment while the device is plugged in and hot!

The suspension:
There are, of course, many options here, too. Some people place the sign directly in the flowerbed, others attach it to a wooden stake and stick it in the ground. In a raised bed, the sign can also be hung on the side. I find a chain hanger particularly stylish for this. Simply drill two hooks into the wood on the left and right and connect them with a chain: And there you have it, the recycled-industrial style!
PS: This decorative piece is perfect not only as a garden sign, but also as a small gift for your first barbecue. After all, who doesn't have that one friend who thinks they're unbeatable at the grill?
