DiY: Sew your own garden apron from fabric scraps
Sure, you can buy gardening aprons on any corner. But they're much nicer when you sew them yourself. You probably even have a piece of fabric at home that you particularly like, but you're not sure what to do with it. Now you know! We'll show you how to cleverly and effortlessly make a gardening apron out of it.
This is what you need:
- 1.50m linen fabric for the apron
- 0.30m leather for trimming the pockets and the top edge
It doesn’t work without tools!
- Scissors
- tape measure
- staples or needles
- sewing machine
- Possibly overlock machine
- iron
Got everything together? Then we can get started!
Follow our step-by-step instructions for your personalized apron:
Step 1: Cut to size
Cut the fabric so that you have a total of five pieces – one front piece, two back pieces, and two pockets. Refer to the photos for the shape of the individual pieces. The straps should be on the back pieces after cutting.

Step 2: Prepare the bags
First, let's focus on the pockets. Cut the leather pieces to size so that they form the top seam of both pockets. Then sew one piece of leather onto each pocket, ideally securing it with staples. Now neaten the pockets all the way around. This will also secure the leather piece to the top edge. Sew the bottom edge of the leather trim in place with a zigzag stitch.
Tip: If you don't have an overlock machine, a zigzag stitch on a regular sewing machine will do the trick.

Step 3: Sew together
Next, lay the front of the apron in front of you, with the "pretty" side facing away from you. Now place the two backing pieces on the inside of the front with the "pretty" side facing up – the straps should be crossed. Sew these to the top edge of the inside. Then sew the side seams together by placing the fabric pieces right sides together. Press the finished seams and then topstitch them with a straight stitch.

Step 4: Sew on the pockets
Now you only have two pockets left. Put on your new apron and decide where the pockets would be most practical for you. Then simply sew the pockets on there.
Step 5: Admire
It's done, your apron is finished! Now it's time to throw it on, spin around three times in front of the mirror, and enjoy the result!
We hope you enjoy your apron or gardening apron! You'll look great both indoors and outdoors!
