Why do we fertilize at all?
It's clear that plants need nutrients to grow and produce a bountiful harvest. They primarily get these nutrients from the soil. On the one hand, there are mineral fertilizers like Blaukorn, which, while very fast-acting, also have some disadvantages. Due to their rapid nutrient supply, mineral fertilizers have a very short-term effect and therefore need to be applied frequently. This, in turn, increases the risk of over-fertilization. Mineral fertilizers can also pose a threat to the environment, for example, by leaching nitrates into groundwater. Another disadvantage of mineral fertilizers: Unfortunately, they do not support healthy soil life.
On the other hand, there are organic fertilizers like compost, which, while particularly sustainable, are unfortunately not practical for everyone. Those who garden on balconies in the city or who only have a small garden area usually cannot create a compost heap. Organic fertilization with manure is another natural alternative, but unfortunately, it has an unpleasant smell. Manure is also not that easy to obtain unless you live in a rural area and have a trusted farmer as a source.
