1. What were the brick molds originally used for?
Wooden brick molds were originally used to make handmade, molded bricks. Clay was slapped into the mold and pressed firmly. The brick was then dried in the sun and finally removed from the mold, which could then be used to make the next brick. While the last hand-molded brickworks in Germany closed in 1949 (see " From Brick God to Industrial Electronics Engineer," page 178), many bricks are still made this way in India today. It's a physically demanding job, performed primarily by women.
2. What material are these molds made of?
The mango wood brick molds are manufactured directly in India by a certified artisan company according to ISO 9001. Thanks to this certification, we can ensure that production is carried out carefully, value-oriented, and under fair conditions. They are made from mango wood, which in India is otherwise usually burned directly on the orchards, as the trees are replanted every five years. The wood not only gives the brick molds their authentic appearance, but is also sustainable. Our brick molds are also fitted with metal fittings. An additional, natural, and chemical-free shellac seal makes them particularly durable. Each brick mold is a unique, handcrafted piece and therefore has its own individual look. Our city gardener logo is lasered into the base.
3. Can the brick mold be placed outside on a windowsill?
Better not. If the mold gets wet occasionally, but generally dries quickly and thoroughly, then that's not a problem. However, if the brick mold stays wet for a longer period of time, the wood will deteriorate after about 1.5-2 years. The metal fittings will also start to rust well before that. So: If your windowsill is somewhat protected from the outside, so the brick mold only gets wet in unfavorable winds, then it's fine. Otherwise, we would advise against it.
And one more tip for indoors: For sensitive surfaces, we recommend using felt pads. The side metal brackets are nailed to the wood at the bottom, which can result in sharp edges.
4. How can you use these wooden brick molds?
Although these wooden molds were originally used to make bricks, you'd think they were designed by a designer. They make beautiful, unique, decorative boxes and storage solutions. They can be used as decorative containers to stylishly display small items like books, magazines, or personal mementos. Thanks to their sturdy construction, they're also ideal for storing toys, towels, or other household items. With a little creativity, they can even be used for upcycling projects, such as plant holders or wall shelves.
5. What are the brick shapes suitable for?
These wooden boxes are a perfect match for a variety of decor styles. Whether you prefer shabby chic, vintage, country house, or industrial, these brick-shaped boxes look great anywhere. With their rustic look, they blend seamlessly into your home and create exciting contrasts. You can get particularly creative with wooden boxes in the living room. Attach them to the wall to create a vintage wooden shelf (you can also use our wall bracket for this). Then decorate them with small pictures, houseplants, or other decorative objects. In the shabby chic style, you can design them in white and adorn them with bright floral decorations. These brick-shaped boxes are not only decorative but also practical in the kitchen. You can use them to store tea, baking ingredients, or spices. Our lid for the brick-shaped boxes is a great addition here. They also make a great stylish organizer for kitchen utensils. Many customers also use the wooden boxes in the bathroom, where they provide practical storage space for various utensils. You can also use them as a mirror or toilet paper holder to give your bathroom a vintage or maritime touch.
6. Do I need to cover the brick mold with waterproof film before planting?
No, a plastic sheet isn't absolutely necessary if you water sparingly. If you want to play it safe, you can, of course, use a plastic sheet. Just be careful to avoid waterlogging.
We hope you find the perfect wooden decoration for your home here and wish you lots of fun browsing and decorating!

What our customers say

Second purchase and just as smooth as the previous one! Great product and simply beautiful. Highly recommended. :-)

Very nice decorative brick shape. I would buy it again in a heartbeat :) Used in the bathroom to store perfumes and toiletries!

I decided to place some low-maintenance plants in this very well-made greenhouse. Opening it every day is too inconvenient for me. The greenhouse creates a pleasant climate inside, so the plants require little watering. It looks decorative and can be filled on multiple levels by raising the pots with stones or pieces of wood. I would buy it again, even though it's more expensive than greenhouses in garden centers or furniture stores. It's unique, beautiful, high-quality, and decorative, and I support the urban gardeners' approach to sustainability, inclusion, and the value of their products.
