The classification into the three categories ( heavy, medium and light feeders ) is important both for a planned crop rotation and for crop rotation. These are two more terms that you will come across frequently when gardening. So here is a brief explanation: Crop rotation is when you plant different plants one after the other in your bed within a season. For example, if you start sowing radishes early in the season, they will be ready for harvest after just six weeks and you will have space in your bed for other plants. Generally speaking, light feeders will still grow and thrive without problems within a season, even if heavy feeders have already extracted a lot of nutrients from the soil. With the right crop rotation, you can therefore get a rich harvest within a season without too many nutrients being lost from the soil or pests spreading. Crop rotation, on the other hand, refers to the rotation of crops over several consecutive gardening seasons. If you cultivate your garden bed for several years in a row, you should always consider what grew in it the previous year. For example, if your soil only has to support heavy feeders for several years, it will eventually become fatigued.

To conclude: Within the three categories, there are, of course, good and bad neighbors. You should also pay attention to that.
