Recipe: Apple sugar
The Christmas season will be sweet for all city gardeners! Because from the last apple harvest or alternatively from the stored apples you can conjure up something very special: Carolin's apple sugar. Allotment gardener Carolin ( plot 14 ) gave us the recipe in the interview "Allotment gardens: No more dusty Prejudices" and we can now share it with you. The ingredients are quickly gathered and we can begin. Are you ready?
Apple sugar in a glass
You need these ingredients:
- 100g white sugar
- 100g brown sugar
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 whole vanilla pod
- 4-5 medium-sized apples
- 1 pinch of ginger powder
A little tip for you:
Instead of drying fresh apples first, you can also use 150g of dried apple rings and process them directly with the remaining ingredients.

Everything here? Then let's get started!
- First, core the apples and slice or grate them into thin slices. The slices should be almost translucent.
- Then place the apple slices next to each other on baking trays lined with baking paper and let them dry in the oven at about 90 degrees for 2-3 hours.
Tip: Be sure to leave the oven door slightly open so the moisture can escape. For example, stick a wooden spoon in the oven door so it remains slightly open. - Once you're sure your apple rings are completely dry, simply place them in a powerful blender along with the remaining ingredients and blend on the highest setting.
- Finally, pour into clean, tightly sealed jars. Done!

That was really child's play! And what do you use the apple sugar for?
Carolin: "The apple sugar is perfect for baked apples, apple pie, or simply for sweetening tea or natural yogurt. If you're still looking for a delicious Christmas gift, you can also beautifully package the apple sugar, print out labels , and place the whole thing under the Christmas tree."
We say THANK YOU for the delicious recipe and the great gift idea. You can read more about Carolin, her family, and her life as an allotment owner here. Be sure to check out her blog or follow her on Instagram —it's worth it.
